This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the world of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Students will explore microbial structure, function, genetics, and ecology, as well as the roles of microorganisms in health, disease, and the environment. Weeks 1 - 12: Introduction to Microbiology

Topics: Overview of microbiology, history and significance, phylogeny, internal structures and biosynthesis.

Weeks 1 - 12: Microbial Genetics

Topics: DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene transfer mechanisms, life cycles, pathogenicity, protozoan morphology.

Weeks 1 - 12: Microbial Ecology and Environmental Microbiology

Topics: Microbial communities, interactions, and roles in ecosystems, host defense mechanisms, mechanisms of action, and resistance, public health.
